Diversity and Inclusion
North Dakota National Guard Vision: A dynamic, relevant force where everyone is a trained, mentored, and empowered leader.
Diversity
Diversity is variety. It includes all the characteristics, experiences, and differences of each individual. Diversity can be identified as physical characteristics such as skin color and gender, or it may be differences in culture, skills, education, personality type, or upbringing. Each of these traits brings their own perspective and skills to the workplace.
Inclusion
Inclusion is simply the act of including others. When individuals all have equal access to information, opportunities, and resources to allow them to fully contribute their individual strengths to the greater organization.
What's the difference between Diversity/Inclusion and EO/EEO?
Diversity and Inclusion is concerned with equity or fairness. Unlike EO/EEO, it is not a legal or regulatory requirement. It is based on choice and includes everyone. The Diversity and Inclusion process aims to improve awareness of others that will lead to positive behavioral changes.
EO/EEO (Equal Opportunity – Military/Equal Employment Opportunity – Civilian) are distinct from Diversity and Inclusion. EO/EEO focus on equality and equal access. They are based on legal and regulatory requirements and are primarily concerned with protected classes. EO/EEO employ corrective and preventative measures for discrimination, harassment, and equal opportunity.
Why does the North Dakota National Guard care about Diversity and Inclusion?
A Diverse and Inclusive workforce provides a variety of perspectives and talents that will enhance the workplace. This workforce allows the organization to capitalize on every individual’s strengths and become stronger and more capable.
In order to maximize its effectiveness and efficiency, the North Dakota National Guard needs the best possible people to work as a team. If a group is excluded, we lose the skills and talents of members of that group, which reduces the potential quality of our organization.
An inclusive work environment is critical, because to work at its best, a team needs to trust and respect each individual. If a member feels excluded or marginalized, he or she is less inclined to work with the team, trust the other members, or add input. Additionally, targeted individuals are more likely to leave the organization, which results in a loss of training, talent, and experience.
Why should I care about Diversity and Inclusion?
The work environment directly affects unit performance. We all want to contribute to a productive and positive work environment. Such an environment enhances effectiveness, increases job satisfaction, and retains valuable employees.
